The works by Helen Frankenthaler in the Reinhard Ernst Collection reflect the extraordinary range of her artistic practice and her constant spirit of experimentation. In addition to paintings, the collection includes works on paper of varying formats – from small-scale pieces such as this one from 1970 to the large-format End of Summer (1995), which measures nearly two by two meters. The diversity of Frankenthaler’s drawings extends from painterly works with rich color application to more restrained, linear compositions.

In her paintings of the 1970s, fine black lines appear that energize the areas of color. In Spanning (1971), Frankenthaler worked with color forms confined to the edges of the canvas. She combined the poured areas of paint with precisely drawn diagonal lines that structure the open space at the center of the composition.
In this work on paper from 1970, the line again functions as a dynamic element connecting color and movement while also defining spatial dimensions. The abstract, pared-down drawing recalls forms from the everyday world – suggestive of a mobile or a windmill. The luminous yellows and oranges, together with the rhythmic composition, create a cheerful and animated mood that echoes the personal dedication:
‘For Jacques – beautiful day, July 26th, 70, love Helen.’
The dedication is addressed to Jacques Tiffeau (1927–1988), who was born in Chenevelles, France. After completing an apprenticeship as a tailor in Paris and working for Christian Dior, he emigrated to the United States in 1952, where he became one of the most celebrated fashion designers of the 1960s.
