More InformationWiesbaden, 27 January 2025 – The year 2025 at the Museum Reinhard Ernst is dedicated to exploring the work of Helen Frankenthaler (1928-2011) through two exhibitions. The New York painter is one of the most influential representatives of Abstract Expressionism, widely credited with launching the movement known as „colour field painting,“ and her rich artistic oeuvre is as inspiring today as it was then.
Wiesbaden, 23. June 2024 -Welcome to the Museum Reinhard Ernst–Germany’s newest art museum. The light-flooded building is the tenth museum building by the famous Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki–and the first art building by the Pritzker Prize winner in Europe. The building
is an architectural invitation to a harmonious encounter between people, architecture and the visual arts. Maki’s mastery is also evident in the fact that he succeeded in creating an independent, thoroughly modern building which simultaneously makes respectful reference to the established, historical urban landscape of Wiesbaden.
‘Colour is Everything!’ titles the first presentation of the collection. An intensive examination of colour is the leitmotif and the starting point. Colour is a passion of museum founder Reinhard Ernst and a prominent feature of his collection. In this opening exhibition, the museum is celebrating colour in absolutely every work–as oil paint, watercolour, ink, varnish, even in glass, photography, steel and bronze.
Wiesbaden, 11. June 2024 – The team at the Museum Reinhard Ernst (mre) was deeply saddened by the news of the death of Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki. The Pritzker Prize winner died on 6 June 2024 at his home in Tokyo. He was 95 years old. The Museum Reinhard Ernst in Wiesbaden, which is about to open, is Fumihiko Maki’s tenth museum building and his only one in Europe.
“With Fumihiko Maki, the world is losing an outstanding architect, and I am losing a very good friend. No other architect was ever considered for the Museum Reinhard Ernst. Fumihiko Maki was involved in this project from the very first drawing. Maki followed the completion of our museum from afar, I regularly sent him photos and we often spoke on the phone. My wife and I are very sad that he will no longer be able to see the opening,” says Reinhard Ernst, founder of the museum.
